Baptisms
The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the gateway to the sacraments and necessary for salvation—either by actual reception or at least by desire. Through baptism:
- We are freed from sin,
- Born again as children of God,
- Configured to Christ by an indelible mark,
- And incorporated into the Church.
God gives us a share in His eternal life through this sacrament. By baptism, we are united with Christ in His suffering, death, and resurrection, and begin a new life as sons and daughters of God.
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.”
— John 3:5

Every unbaptized person, and only such a person, is eligible for baptism.
Infants in danger of death
Infants in danger of death are to be baptized without delay.
Valid Baptism
Baptism is validly conferred only by washing with real water and the proper form of words.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
— Matthew 28:19–20
